Makharij (Articulation Points): Every Arabic letter has a specific place of origin from which it is pronounced. Some letters are produced from the throat, others from the mouth, and still others from the nasal cavity. Tajweed emphasizes learning these places of articulation to ensure accurate pronunciation.
Sifaat (Characteristics of Letters): These characteristics distinguish one Arabic letter from another. Some letters are "heavy" (like ط and ق), while others are "light" (like ف and ب). The heavy letters are pronounced with a stronger, more resonant sound, and the light ones are softer.
Qalqalah (Echoing Sound): Qalqalah refers to the "bouncing" or "echoing" sound of certain letters (ق, ط, ب, ج, د) when they occur with a sukoon (a diacritical mark indicating no vowel sound). These letters produce a sharp, resonant sound when recited.
Madd (Elongation): Madd refers to the elongation of vowels. Some vowels in the Quran are meant to be elongated, either for a brief period or a longer duration. For example, the letter "Alif" (ا) can be pronounced for 2 to 6 counts depending on the specific rule.
Idgham (Merging of Letters): When two specific letters meet, the sound of one letter merges into the other. This is called Idgham, and it is an important rule for smooth recitation. There are six letters in Arabic that commonly form this merging.
Iqlab (Conversion): Iqlab involves the conversion of the letter "ن" (Noon) into the sound of "م" (Meem) when followed by the letter "ب" (Baa) to avoid mispronunciation.
Ikhfa (Hiding the Sound): In Ikhfa, a letter is pronounced with partial concealment when followed by certain other letters. It involves a light nasal sound as the air is released through the nose.
